The original Knox Church was opened on the corner of Great King and Frederick Streets on 6 May 1860. Soon, a larger church was needed and the present site was bought for £550. The 'new' Knox Church, designed by R A Lawson, architect of First Church, Otago Boys' High School and Larnach Castle, is what you see. It is in 13th century Gothic Style, built of locally quarried bluestone with Oamaru stone facings with a North Otago slate roof. It seats about 900 people. The Church cost £18,383 to build and has been a place of worship since 5 November 1876.

The sanctuary window was made by J Wippel & Co of Exeter and installed in 1964 in memory of the women of Knox. The central figure is Christ in Glory surrounded by the winged symbols (man, lion, ox & eagle) of the 4 evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. Kneeling are Peter (crossed keys) and Paul (sword). The dove above Christ's head represents the Holy Spirit. The emerald rainbow and Greek letters alpha & omega, at the top of the window, come from the Book of Revelation.

The Stuart memorial at the rear of the church was made by R H Fraser of Dunedin in 1896. The top depicts the transfigured Christ, the blessing of the children and Christ's agony in Gethsemane. Further down are the evangelists above their winged symbols. The main figures are John Knox, the 16th century Scottish reformer for whom Knox Church is named, St. Andrew (Patron Saint of Scotland) St. Margaret (11th Century Queen of Scotland) and Dr. Donald Stuart, the first minister of Knox Church 1860 - 1894.

All our church's stone carving (except the font) is the work of Louis Godfrey, who, worked on Larnach Castle, First Church and St. Joseph's Cathedral also. The capitals (carvings round the tops of the columns) are stylised foliage downstairs. Upstairs, In the Gallery, they are recognisable flowers and foliage and a bird sequence from uninterested pair to nestlings.
