The original Knox Church was opened on the corner of Great King and Frederick Streets on 6 May 1860. Soon, a larger church was needed and the present site was bought for £550. The 'new' Knox Church, designed by R A Lawson, architect of First Church, Otago Boys' High School and Larnach Castle, is what you see. It is in 13th century Gothic Style, built of locally quarried bluestone with Oamaru stone facings with a North Otago slate roof. It seats about 900 people. The Church cost £18,383 to build and has been a place of worship since 5 November 1876. The photograph is 21st century. You can compare it to the 19th century painting below.
